Our birth doula program supports women during labor and delivery
Women who choose adoption for their babies deserve support, respect and compassion. This is why we offer a unique Birth Doula Program to all of our pregnant mothers who are placing a baby for adoption in Texas. Women can choose to add a birth doula to their labor and delivery team at no cost, ensuring that they have a supportive, knowledgeable expert present to advocate for them and their hospital birth plan.
What is a birth doula?
When you make an adoption plan, you are in control of every aspect of your birth experience. A doula is a trained professional who can help you prepare for delivery, support you through your birth experience, and ensure that your wishes are respected.
Doulas are not medical providers, so all clinical decisions will still be made by licensed medical professionals. Instead, doulas are knowledgeable allies who provide emotional, physical and informational support during pregnancy, labor and birth.
What support is provided by Our Birth doula Program during delivery?
If you opt into Legacy Adoption Services’ Birth Doula Program, you can choose to have a doula by your side to support you at the hospital from beginning to end.
- Your doula will want to meet with you before you go into labor, so you can get to know each other and start preparing for the birth.
- Your doula will stay with you at the hospital during labor, delivery and the immediate postpartum period to provide continuous, calming support and encouragement.
- Doulas can help make labor more manageable by helping with breathing techniques, positioning, massage and other comfort measures.
- Your doula can explain what is happening during labor and help you understand your options, so you can make informed decisions about your medical care.
- After delivery, your doula will stay with you to provide immediate postpartum support.
Your hospital birth plan will document your preferences during labor and delivery. Because your doula will know your birth and adoption plans and preferences, she can clearly communicate with the care team to ensure that your wishes are respected. This includes several important choices that you will make ahead of time, such as who you want in the delivery room; when adoptive parents are involved; how you would like time with your baby handled; and your preferences for photos, visitors and bonding time.
